The month of August, Mount Pleasant in Michigan, is transformed annually since 2012 into an art gallery during #Central Art Walk. In this unique competition, almost 120 artists display their artwork in public settings, from photography and sculptures, to paintings and crafts.
Works of art invade local businesses, galleries and greenery in the Mt. Pleasant area. Locations include the Morey Family Art Gallery, downtown businesses, Town Center, Ziibiwing Cultural Center, Central Michigan University Art Gallery and more!
A vote on the best artworks takes place and prizes are awarded for both jurors and people’s choice. In the kickoff event, Artists Battle participants have two hours to complete a project.
There are also lots of participatory opportunities reinforcing that art should be accessible to all and that keep art alive. One of them is the Painting the Intersection initiative, like the one in Main & Broadway. Its success has led to the proposal being extended to a second intersection in downtown.
In this way, communities interested in using placemaking on the street are encouraged to start with this small event. Therefore the competition is also considered a community art infusion.
In addition, throughout the month there are a variety of activities offered to children and adults. Outdoor films, a banner festival, chalk art installation and many different workshops are offered.
This competition is organised by@artreachofmidmi , an arts organization created to keep the arts alive in the community.
