On two Sundays every month, Rwanda’s capital Kigali closes its main roads to cars and people take over. The city’s first #carfreeday was launched in 2016 to reduce emissions and promote a healthier and active lifestyle.
On the continent, Rwanda is not the only country with temporary road closures. The first African city was Cape Town, South Africa, which has been hosting #openstreetsevents since May 2013. In recent years, Kampala, Uganda, and Nairobi, Kenya, as well as seven Ethiopian cities have joined the movement.
Does your city have #carfreedays?
