Coole Straßen

Vienna, Austria ,2020

Now that summer is coming to an end, we would like to share a “cool” project with you that took place during the summer months in Vienna – the “Coole Straßen” or translated Cool Streets!

The #CooleStraße project is a temporary heat mitigation measure to combat the #urbanheatisland effect while recovering #publicspace. The streets were closed to car traffic, seating was installed, and different actions took place. With shady greenery, cooling fog showers and fountains, it aims to improve the microclimate in public space during hot summer days.

The project was started last year as a pilot project, this year it was extended to 18 streets throughout Vienna. The locations were selected in consultation with the districts based on the Vienna Heatmap, which shows the places in Vienna where cooling is most urgently needed.

And indeed, the evaluation shows that the street temperature dropped by up to 5° C and – as you can see on the photos – people enjoyed the coolness!
